Variability of metabolic rate, energy expenditure and cardiovascular function in expert e'athletes
The data in the spreadheet included here are measurements of metabolic rate, energy expenditure and cardiovascular function of 13 expert e’athletes when at rest and when engaged in esports game play, as well as comparative measurements showing the variability in responses.
Subjects of the measured data were thirteen healthy male participants ranked within the top 10% of their respective esports. Expired gas analysis indirect calorimetry measured gas exchange data during rest and gaming. The data shows that compared to resting conditions, competitive esports gameplay significantly increased median energy expenditure, oxygen consumption and carbon dioxide production. Competitive gameplay also resulted in a significant increase in heart rate and decrease in R-R intervals when compared to rest. No significant differences were evident in time or frequency measures of heart rate variability.
