Dr David Rowlings is a researcher with Queensland University of Technology’s Institute for Future Environments. His fields of expertise include carbon (C), nitrogen (N) and water (H2O) cycling from natural, agricultural and urbanised environments, with emphasis on how changing land uses influences these cycles. A key aspect of this includes the intensive monitoring of soil-borne greenhouse gases (N2O, CH4, CO2) and the key microbial processes involved. During his PhD he examined the influence of land use change on greenhouse gas emissions from natural rainforest soils, to improved pasture and a Lychee orchard in the subtropical region of SE Queensland. Current projects include N budgets and use efficiency in dairy systems, the influence of urbanisation on C, N and H2O fluxes and the greenhouse gas budget of reservoir flooding.
